This protein is actually responsible for the growth of nails and skin as well. Hair usually consists of three parts and they are known as medulla, cortex and cuticle. Hair growth is featured with different cycles. Every cycle is actually divided into three categories and they are Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. The cycle is explained in detail below.
Hair growth cycle
- Anagen stage Anagen stage is also called as growth stage. This phase usually varies from 2 to 6 years. During this stage, hair grows about 10 cm every year.
- Catagen stage This is commonly known as a transitional stage. After the anagen phase, the next stage that the hair enters is the catagen stage. During this time, the hair follicle is shrunk to about 1/6 when compared to the normal length. The lower portion is completely ruined and the dermal papilla breaks down.
- Telogen stage This is commonly known as resting phase. It starts after catagen phase and lasts for about 5 to 6 weeks. Hair growth is not caused at this stage, whereas it stays attached to the follicle. At the end of this phase, it again reaches the anagen phase and new hair begins to grow.
